The Den Run Will Be Quicker Soon

Den Run you ask? Yes, the Den Run. Our nearest alcoholic beverage provider is about 40 something kilometres from here, which kinda sucks when the road is all chopped up during and after the Wet season. Well, by September at the latest, we won’t have to worry about washouts, or truck eating potholes, or bogs that breed those bog monster thingies from Labyrinth. We’re getting some of that new fangled ‘Bit-U-Min’. I took these pics back in May, during a rare break in the late season rains. I was the first vehicle bogged on the roadworks :). Not sure if I should be proud of that or not. This series of images were taken on the 25th of May 2014. They are just a personal historical record to remember days gone by. Days of 5 hour drives to Cooktown, 75km away. Days of waiting for the road to dry before venturing to the pub. Days of doing 30km/h or less because so many rocks had been exposed and to go any faster would doom your suspension to destruction.
I meant to post these pics a while ago, but you know how it goes. I’ll take some updates in the next couple days to compare progress since the rain stopped a few weeks back.

  1. Oh my, that’s a very fancy-pants looking road! I always forget how berserk FNQ rainforest is…imagine hacking the first road through all that.

    • Oh it will be soon Inga. I posted last year or so with pics of some of the road in its Wet Season attire. Pot holes 1.5 metres wide, a metre long and 40cm deep. This new flash Bit-U-Men stuff is supposed to be dust free and doesn’t get too slippery in the rain. I’ll believe it when I see it 😉

  2. There’s a lot of money being splashed around repairing roads all over the far north this year. Last time we drove to Innisfail there were 7 sets of portable traffic lights in 25 kilometres.
I liked your new Bit-U-Men between Lakeland and Cooktown too…..yep, we eventually made it for a day, and liked the place so much we’ll be returning soon.

    • Yep, it’s pretty flash up this way nowadays. Might even get us a McDonalds one day. Then we’ll really know we’ve made it (and I’ll know it’s definitely time to move 🙂 )

  3. HI Brad, thanks for all these good pics. It’s my old home run and I vowed to return when no more axles would be broken and bit-u-min passed the gate ..looks like it might be 2015 🙂 cheers
